What is Aquablation therapy?

Aquablation is a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery that uses a high-pressure, heat-free waterjet to precisely remove excess prostate tissue causing benign prostate enlargement, improving urinary flow with fewer sexual and urinary side effects than traditional treatments.

How does Aquablation therapy work?

The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic. A small ultrasound probe is placed into the rectum, and a camera with a built-in water jet is passed through the urethra. Using ultrasound guidance from two angles, a 3D map of the prostate is created. This allows Mr Nettleton to plan the treatment precisely.

The robot then delivers a water jet to remove the excess prostate tissue, following the exact plan. Afterward, bleeding is controlled using a small loop electrode. A catheter is placed at the end of the operation and usually removed before discharge.

Why choose Aquablation therapy?

Aquablation is suitable for a wide range of prostate sizes and offers consistent, predictable results. Unlike some traditional procedures such as TURP and laser surgery, it is heat-free, meaning there is a lower risk of affecting ejaculation and no evidence of harm to erectile function. Studies show only 0.5% of men develop stress incontinence after treatment. There is a 0% risk of erectile dysfunction and only a 11% chance of ejaculatory dysfunction.

What are the treatment options?

Aquablation is one of several treatments available for benign prostate enlargement. Mr Nettleton offers a thorough assessment to help each patient understand their symptoms and choose the most appropriate option. This might include:

  • Lifestyle or dietary changes
  • Medication
  • iTind
  • Rezum
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
  • Aquablation therapy
  • Laser Enucleation of the prostate (HOLEP)

Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, taking into account prostate size, symptom severity, personal goals, and other medical conditions

  • Very good care and treatment for my prostate aquablation proceedure, from the initial consultation where options were given, through having the op on private care in association with the NHS to the final after operation consultation. As with all operations there are risks from aquablation surgery. These risks include infection, bleeding, pain, urinary stricture, incontinence, ejaculatory dysfunction, and reprocedure. These risks are common to all urological procedures for the prostate and can be discussed further in clinic.
